Renal atrophy with compensatory hypertrophy

A 60 year old Chinese woman walked in for an abdominal scan. She is asymptomatic. Ultrasound demonstrated an atrophic right kidney, with bipolar length measurement of about 7.8cm. The echogenicity of the kidney appeared markedly increased with loss of corticomedullary differentiation. The left kidney revealed an enlarged (13.3cm bipolar length) but otherwise normal kidney.
