Physiological variants: Brown fat

52 year old lady with p/h endometrial carcinoma. PETCT done for re-staging. Arrows points to bilateral symmetrical foci of intense FDG uptake in the fatty tissue of the lower neck and shoulder. These are consistent with brown fat.
Brown fat produces heat and exhibits increased glucose metabolism. It is commonly seen in children and young female and should be reduced with mild sedation. Interestingly, this lady is in her early fifties and 10mg valium orally was given before the scan.
